Floe
Floe is an abstract strategy game for two players on a hex board that shrinks as you play. Every capture and every fusion removes a tile, so the board reshapes itself in every game. Like chess and go it has open information and no luck: no dice, no cards and no hidden moves. Unlike chess, a game never ends in a draw.
Floe is free to play in the browser and as an app: against seven bots from beginner to expert, with daily puzzles, lessons, rated online games, tournaments and friends. It works offline against the bots.
The rules in brief
- Goal: capture or cut off your opponent's Nucleus, the crowned piece. There are no draws.
- Pieces: Essences stack into levels 1 to 3. An L1 moves one step, an L2 one step or a leap between the lines, an L3 up to three steps in a straight line, jumping over everything. The Nucleus moves one step.
- Fusion and splitting: move onto your own piece to stack them; the tile you left falls away. Or split off the top of a stack, which leaves the tile in place.
- Capture: any piece can capture any other, even an L1 an L3. The capturer stays on a cracked tile that falls when it leaves.
- The Snap: when the board splits, only the largest part survives; everything on the smaller parts falls. A Nucleus that falls loses the game.
- The storm: after ten moves without a fallen tile, an edge tile falls.
Ways to play
